6-24-08: Scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue'

Scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue' This plant is the perfect gift to the garden, lovely lavender-blue flowers cap slender 12” stems over a mound of ferny blue grey foliage. The blooming time is late spring to early fall, four full months of continuous flowers, valuable as cut flowers as well as a delicate beauty in the garden.

Scabiosa is named the pincushion flower because each blossom reminds one of a satin pincushion topped with pearl-headed pins. And yes in the 1500’s, a bath of scabiosa tea was the prescribed cure for scabies, hence the name. This plant grows well in full sun to light shade, moist well drained soil. It has no disease or insect problems and is not affected by summer heat. The flowers are nectar rich and attract butterflies and hummingbirds, but deer tend to avoid them. Mass plantings are very impressive but ‘Butterfly Blue’ is happy in a pot as well. David Tristran admired this cultivar in an Irish garden and grew it for over 15 years before introducing this exceptional plant to the garden trade. In 2000 it became perennial plant of the year. Combine scabiosa with gold yarrow, salvias, pinks and lady’s mantle, space plants 1’-1.5’ apart. Enjoy this exquisite perennial in your garden.
