6-28-11: Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' |
|
One of our customers stopped in his tracks when he saw Salvia ‘Caradonna’ today. When a plant person exclaims ‘aha’ at a plant in our nursery I know it is time to remind everyone of this plant. Caradonna salvia is a stunning addition to the perennial garden. This sage grows 25 inches high by 20 inches wide, grows in full sun and attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and honeybees but not deer. Caradonna has a very upright habit which makes it easy to cut for floral arrangements and the more you cut it the more it blooms. The flower stalks shoot strait up in abundance, the color is a deep indigo with purple-black stems. Supporting the flowers is a lush green foliage base which is slightly aromatic. Salvias in general are drought tolerant once established. If planted in the spring, water on a regular basis throughout the summer and early autumn. If planted in the fall they will establish roots during the winter and will require less water the following summer. Some complementary plants for salvia are lavenders, daylilies, ornamental grasses and ‘Sunshine Blue’ blueberries.
