6-29-10: Nandina domestica 'Gulfstream'

Nandinas are most noted as a shrub with colorful autumn foliage, but the beauty of this plant lies in its finely textured lacy leaves, attractive red berries, and cream colored flowers. Nandina's attractiveness compliments a tough nature that is tolerant of both urban conditions and drought.

Nandina is often planted as informal hedges, ground covers, in borders, and in containers. They can even be grown under eves with very little water. Plant in full sun to part shade. To keep mature plants fresh, prune back older stalks to the ground and new foliage will replace them. Lovely as cut flowers.

On solstice the 21st of June, my niece had her fifth birthday and we celebrated outside in her garden (and what does this have to do with Nandina, you ask?) The Nandina hedge kept our party a bit private and the creamy flowers were cut and mixed in a bouquet with sweet pink peonies and pure white calla lilies, a testament of just how serviceable and lovely Nandina is.

Gulf Stream is our featured Nandina growing 3 feet high by 1.5 feet wide. This is a dense compact shrub whose new growth is bronze with orange tints; the older leaves are blue green turning to gold red, a lovely medium sized shrub. Gulf Stream makes a perfect short hedge for looking over but not walking through. Mix it in your garden for year round color and wouldn’t that fresh golden green look great in a vase?
