6-30-09: Iris louisiana 'Black gamecock'

Iris louisiana 'Black gamecock' Here we have an iris that is very dark, very vigorous and very hardy that will do well in every garden.

It is a dependable, long lived perennial. ‘Black gamecock’ is a native to the gulf coast, likes a neutral or acidic soil, plenty of fertilizer and water. This iris likes soil amended with organic matter. Plant rhizomes 1 inch under soil and ten top with 2-4 inches of mulch. Adorned with a velvety midnight-purple flower that is about 6 inches wide ‘Black gamecock’ grows 5 feet tall by 2 feet wide and thrives in up to 3 inches of water at the edge of a pond on in an abundantly watered garden. This is a stunning cut flower and is easy to grow. As with all irises, deer prefer not to eat them. Combine this iris with arrowwood (viburnum dentatum) and cardinal flower (lobelia).

Tidbit of the week: Iris is the Greek goddess of the rainbow (arco iris is rainbow in spanish) and her presence is a sign of hope.
