7-13-10: Spirea japonica 'Goldmound' |
|
Spireas are simultaneously old fashioned and very modern. Spirea ‘Goldmound’ has colorful growth in the spring, summer and fall. Blooming in summer with sweet deep pink flowers, it is a very colorful addition to the garden. Shearing spent flower heads after blooming will produce a second round of flowers. The foliage starts out in spring a soft red fading to chartreuse and on to lime green throughout the summer. In fall the leaves are brilliant orange red and in winter lovely brown stems are topped by dried, lace-like flower heads. Spireas prefer rich moist loam and will thrive with organic mulch. They are useful as hedges or in a mixed border. Mature height is about 3-4 feet high by 3-4 feet wide. This plant is complemented well by Lavandula ‘Provence’, Pinus mugo and Cistus ‘Sunset’.
