7-17-07: Nandina 'Umpqua Chief'

Nandina ‘Umpqua Chief’ makes an unusual hedge or screen with its lightly branched, delicate, finely textured lacy-looking foliage or can also be used as a dramatic focal point.

This variety of Heavenly Bamboo is slow growing to 3 feet high and 2 feet wide in 3 years, maturing at 5 to six feet tall and 3 feet wide after several years. ‘Umpqua Chief’ is a hardy evergreen shrub in mild climates like ours, only being damaged at zero degrees and below, even then recovering quickly. This variety has year round interest with its large creamy white blossom clusters in spring and summer and its beautiful bronze fall color that turns more fiery crimson in winter with each passing frost.
