|
Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm' This old garden standard is a real treasure and very popular. Rudbeckia means resplendent and Goldsturm is German for gold storm, what a perfect description. Rudbeckia is a North American native that was taken to Europe where the ‘Goldsturm’ cultivar was developed in Germany in 1937. It was then "reintroduced" to North America in the 1940’s. This hardy perennial has deep dark, green leaves and is topped by the classic black-eyed susan flowers, golden yellow petals and a chocolate center. It is often cut for floral arrangements as the flowers are lovely and long lasting. Plant in full sun to light shade and they will grow 2 feet high by 2 feet wide. The flowers are beautiful to humans and also goldfinches, chickadees, and provide summer nectar for butterflies. Combine these with aster x frikartii, verbena bonariensis, miscanthus sinensis, and Echinacea purpurea.
