7-8-08: Sequoia sempervirens

Sequoia sempervirens We all have images in our heads when we hear about coast redwoods or ‘the redwoods’ of California. I often think of a car driving through a tree trunk, a thick matt of needles under towering giants, or a deep quiet forest.

This tree is also thought of as growing in a preserve, a national park, or an arboretum. It can be grown beautifully in many gardens. It is a fast grower 65’ in 20 years. Redwoods have soft fragrant foliage, thick red/brown bark and small one inch cones that form in clusters at the branch tips. They like a coastal influence meaning water as fog or from a hose. They are pest and disease free. Redwoods are planted as a single tree or in groves 10’-15’ apart. You may under plant redwoods with azaleas, camellia and ferns or native plants. Hyperion is the largest redwood in the world and tallest living thing at 379.1’ high by 26’ in diameter. It is 2,200 years old and is located in the Redwoods National Park. With this in mind you want to leave space between your house and the tree (and your neighbor’s house and the tree). Realize that you are planting something very special with a lot of potential for you and many generations to come after you. The tree will be going strong long after your home has seen better days. Notice also how many redwoods you see growing around in your neighborhood, you might be surprised.
