8-05-08: Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Longin’

Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Longin’ Not really a sage, not really Russian yet a totally carefree and rewarding addition to any sunny garden. Although Russian sage is a member of the square stemmed mint family it is not used in cooking. It is not from Russia but Central Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tibet) and was named by a Russian botanist, Karelin for a Russian governor, B.A. Perovski. The most captivating characteristic of this striking perennial is its tall lavender-blue flower stalks that seem to form a soft vibrant haze above its light grayish green foliage all summer long, very impressive when planted in a drift.

These flowers are excellent as fresh cut or dried blooms in arrangements. Plant Russian sage in full sun about 18 inches apart. It grows 3-4 feet tall. You may leave the dry stems standing for a silvery winter display. Cut back in spring to ground. Combine Perovski with ornamental grasses, white phlox, rudbeckia, barberry and lavender. Russian Sage is a good choice for the landscape when a drought tolerant and hardy perennial is needed.
