8-17-10: Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star' |
|
This is a stand out plant. In our garden, at the nursery, they are so popular we have on occasion even dug them out of the landscape for customers. The color is fantastic, very silvery blue-green with the new growth being a bit lighter. Used as a ground cover or low hedge ‘Blue Star’ grows three to four feet wide by about 2 feet tall. As with all junipers it requires an open sunny spot, doesn’t mind poor soil as long as it is well drained and not at all boggy or water logged and is drought tolerant once established. The growth of ‘Blue Star’ can be described as graceful wide mounds. Plant in drifts or mixed with kinnikinnick, sedum, lavender, heathers and wooly thyme or any other plants that do not flop over and smother it. ‘Blue Star’ is not as prickly as some junipers and is very well behaved in the garden. I’m sure you will enjoy it in the ground or in a container.
