8-2-11: Helictotrichon sempervirens

All the wild grasses are waving in the breeze, dotted with daisies and other wild flowers.

To have that look in your garden or a more subdued version of it add a few of the tamer grasses here and there. One well behaved and lovely grass is the Blue Oat Grass, an evergreen with blue gray foliage and golden oat-like seed heads that are just about to appear. This grass grows well in poor conditions, including gravel. Plant in sun and water the first year, after that it is drought tolerant. This graceful grass grows 2’ x2’ and can be used in pots. It is non invasive. Plant with other grasses or perennials, may also be used as a contrast to a more formal planting such as rhododendrons and conifers.
