8-23-11: Miscanthus sinensis 'Yaku Jima' |
|
Puffy plumes that form in late summer to early fall are one of the rewards of planting this grass in your garden, or lots of it. Miscanthus are some of the showiest of the ornamental grasses, forming clumps that can be planted singly or in great swaths for a meadow affect. ‘Yaku Jima’ likes full sun or part shade. It prefers moist soil, yet will tolerate all soils. A diminutive grass, of its class, it grows 3’-4’ tall and 2’-3’ wide. The flower heads last well into the dead of winter and have their own beauty covered with frost and glistening in the sun. We are not thinking about that during the summer but instead enjoying the gentle movement of the grass in the summer breeze. Add grasses to your perennial bed, plant in pots, or tuck one or two in with some evergreens. They are very adaptable and can be divided and shared within a year or two.
