“Sedges have edges, rushes are round.” Have you heard this saying reminding us of which is which? If you look at the stems of Gold Strike Rush they are defiantly round. The base is a reddish color from which a lovely green stem pops up, this is striped with a bright golden yellow. On top of the stems are flowers that appear to be multiple round bronzy green balls whose weight often gracefully bends the long stem over in an arching way. This rush grows about two feet tall and prefers part shade yet will grow in full sun. Rushes need moisture so they are well suited for damp and wet soils. With this in mind they could easily grow next to a pond or stream or in a low spot that collects water. The native rush often comes in on it’s own to these spots. Plant your ‘Gold Strike’ accordingly. Combine ‘Gold Strike’ with Cornus alba ‘ Elegantissima’, a variety of daylilies, iris sibirica ‘Bennerup Blue’ and a few sedges such as carex ‘Aureovariegata’ or ‘Ice Dance’.
