8-30-11: Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Little Spire' |
|
Although “Russian Sage” is a misnomer, as this plant is neither a sage nor Russian, this is a great perennial for sunny spaces. It performs well even in poor soil conditions and stands up beautifully to drought and glaring sun. Smaller and tidier than ‘Longin’ and other common varieties, ‘Little Spire’ grows about two to three feet tall and about three feet wide. What’s the best characteristic of this perennial? The fact that it’s totally carefree? Drought tolerant? Deer resistant? That it blooms all summer long? That it makes a great cut flower for arrangements? Whatever the reason you have to choose this plant, it will not disappoint. Its tall, lavender-blue flower stalks seem to form a soft cloud above the light green foliage, a feature that is especially lovely when planted in multiples. It looks beautiful as the backdrop to Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’. Or, mimic a wild meadow and plant Russian sage with ornamental grasses such as the Miscanthus ‘Yaku Jima’.
