Juniperus conferta 'Blue Pacific' Many inquiries come to the nursery regarding groundcovers. A groundcover usually means a plant that hugs the ground, a foot or less in height, and a wide range of width. A groundcover can be plants that get taller and keep the soil covered to create a beautiful landscape. They are useful in preventing weeds and unwanted plants from popping up. One of our favorite ground hugging groundcovers is ‘Blue Pacific’ Juniper. We like the green color cast with a bluish haze atop reddish brown bark. It is a rapid grower, ten inches high by ten feet wide and thrives in full sun with well drained soil. It is drought and deer tolerant. The needles are about one half inch long, star like in design, and soft, not prickly, so when you are pruning you don’t get stabbed. This is a very durable, attractive plant used in mass planting, interspersed in the garden, used for erosion control on steep slopes, placed along walls or in containers to hang over the edges. If you need to prune this juniper, you simply pull up a branch and clip it off resulting in a very natural look. ‘ Blue Pacific’ is a great year round plant that will satisfy the desire for a good groundcover.
