8-9-11: Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm'

This old garden standard is a real treasure and very popular.

Rudbeckia is a North American native taken to Europe and the ‘Goldstrum’ cultivar selected in Germany in 1937 and then reintroduced here in the 40’s. Rudbeckia means resplendent and goldstrum is German for gold storm, what a perfect description.

This hardy perennial has deep dark green leaves and is topped by the classic black-eyed susan flowers, golden yellow petals and a chocolate center. Cut for floral arrangements they are lovely and long lasting. Plant in full sun to light shade and they will grow 2 feet high by 2 feet wide. The flowers are beautiful to humans and also goldfinches, chickadees, and summer nectar for butterflies. Combine these with aster x frikartii, berbena bonariensis, miscanthus sinensis, and Echinacea purpurea.
