9-11-07: Sequoiadendron giganteum

Sequoiadendron giganteum is world-renowned as one of the largest living things on the planet. Closely related to the Coast Redwood (sequoia sempervirens), in the wild these majestic trees can reach 250-325 feet tall, with the girth of the trunk growing to 35 feet in diameter.

Under cultivation however, Giant Sequoia are a neat, handsome addition to any large open landscape or lawn area growing 60-100 feet tall with branches reaching to 30-50 feet wide in our lifetime. Growing 2-3 feet per year, their growth habit is pyramidal and dense in youth. As the trees mature their massive, tapering trunk turns a characteristic reddish-brown color that is deeply fissured, contrasting nicely to the small blue green, scale-like leaves which are spirally arranged on sweeping dense branches. Native to California's Sierra Nevada Mountains at 4500-8000 foot elevation, the Giant Sequoia is hardier to cold than the Coast Redwood and needs less water to thrive. Even though Giant Sequoias are not the tallest trees in the world, they will always continue to inspire wonder with their sheer volume. We are also offering Giant Sequoia in #1's for $3.00
