9-21-10: Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon'

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Black Dragon’ is a semi-dwarf, elegant conifer with needle like foliage that begins as a light green and then darkens to a black green as it matures.

Black Dragon Japanese Cedar displays thick, willowy foliage and is a striking selection which grows ultimately 5-6 feet high and 3 feet wide in 10 years, forming a dark pyramid that is a great contrast for brighter colors. It is the dense pyramidal habit and black green foliage that distinguishes this conifer. Some selective pruning will accentuate the sculptural, upward sweeping, horizontal arms that give this beauty its fantastic irregular character. ‘Black Dragon’ is one of the easiest of the Japanese Cedars to grow and each plant is a distinct individual, good for a sunny or partially shady location. Crypotomeria japonica ‘Black Dragon’ grows best with ample summer water and protection from cold, drying winter winds.
