Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blue Wave' Hydrangea is a memory plant, it evokes a certain type of nostalgia for a time or place or person such as the bright blue late summer flowers on the side of a great aunt’s cottage or a sweet bouquet on a richly set table at a quaint seaside restaurant... and maybe a dried arrangement in a large copper pot greeting you upon arrival at a foreign hotel. For happy hydrangeas in Pacific Northwest gardens provide dappled shade/sun, not too much of either, water plenty, but not standing water, and a rich humus soil, the sweeter the soil the more pink the flower, the more acid soil and the color will be bluer. ‘Blue Wave is the lace cap hydrangea we have in our shade house. It grows 6 feet by 6 feet with 8 inch diameter flower. This is a deciduous shrub that blooms late July through September. Hydrangeas bloom on the previous year’s wood. Prune after flowering by cutting 1/3 of the old stalks to the ground. ‘Blue Wave is a strong hardy grower and one of the finest of all lacecaps. Side notes – Hydrangea in flower language means earnestness. By giving a hand full of hydrangea or hortensia flowers you could be communicating any heartfelt emotion from joy to grief. Hydrangea tea, ama-chi, in Japan is an infusion made from tea leaves and hydrangea flowers. Try a cup while sitting in your garden.
