|
Sequoiadendron giganteum This is a tree that looks ‘like a tree’, the kind we all drew as kids, a triangle on a trunk. Look around and you will find one in a landscape. In the wild these majestic trees can reach 250-325 feet tall, with the girth of the trunk growing to 35 feet in diameter. Under cultivation however, Giant Sequoias are a neat, handsome addition to any large open landscape or lawn area growing 60-100 feet tall with branches reaching to 30-50 feet wide in our lifetime. Growing 2-3 feet per year, their growth habit is pyramidal and dense in youth. As the trees mature, their massive, tapering trunk turns a characteristic reddish-brown color that is deeply fissured. This contrasts nicely to the small blue green, scale-like leaves which are spirally arranged on sweeping dense branches. Native to California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains at 4500-8000 foot elevation, the Giant Sequoia is hardy to cold temperatures and is drought tolerant once established. This is an awe inspiring tree planted alone or as a giant hedge or in a group.
