9-30-08: Osmanthus heterophyllus 'variegatus'

Osmanthus heterophyllus 'variegatus' What looks to be a variegated holly is an osmanthus, a lovely shrub whose name means fragrant flower in Greek. It is just when the sweet scents of summer ends the osmanthus takes over and blooms with tiny flowers so fragrant with the sweet smell of apricots.

The flowers eventually turn into a blue fruit which adds another color to this attractive shrub. Due to its versatility and durability it can be a perfect addition to any garden. This particular osmanthus has bright, creamy white and clean light green leaves with a touch of deep pink. This evergreen with lighten any dark corner of the garden. Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘variegatus’ can be used as an informal hedge (prune late winter to early summer for a tighter form), a single plant growing naturally into an elegant multistemmed tree (10 – 12 feet tall x 8 – 10 feet wide) or can easily be grown in a container. This is an extremely tough plant with no known pests or diseases. Osmanthus will thrive in a wide range of soils including clay. As for plant combinations you may be creative with this one as it can go with just about anything. Have fun with this sweet osmanthus.
