7-29-08: Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm'

Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm' This old garden standard is a real treasure and very popular. Rudbeckia means resplendent and Goldsturm is German for gold storm, what a perfect description. Rudbeckia is a North American native that was taken to Europe where the ‘Goldsturm’ cultivar was developed in Germany in 1937. It was then "reintroduced" to North America in the 1940’s. This hardy perennial has deep dark, green leaves and is topped by the classic black-eyed susan flowers, golden yellow petals and a chocolate center.

Sequoia sempervirens This plant inspires me. My favorite part of the purple coneflower is the vibrant and bright brilliant orange-spiked center. This beautiful display is the seed head that first attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and honey bees, later followed by finches in the late autumn when the seeds mature.
